What is Active Embodiment?

Actors, do you sometimes struggle to effectively analyse and understand the scene you've been asked to present for a self-tape or audition?

Or, even when you get the part, do you experience performance anxiety or a nagging, underlying feeling that you’re ‘faking it’?

Or maybe you’re tired of ‘imposter syndrome’ destroying your confidence?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then you’re not alone!

Experience has shown that even after three years of formal drama training and a host of professional credits, many actors still struggle to know exactly what to do when the much longed for audition or self-tape request comes in.

The first obstacle to great acting is a lack of reliable, practical knowledge.

The simple fact is, many actors don’t know how to do their job properly!

Here’s the solution -

Active Embodiment

Active Embodiment is a modern, organic acting technique, which allows actors to analyse and create any character’s general and immediate psychology, and express it through imagination and action.

Created by British director, John Osborne Hughes, Active Embodiment is the culmination of the work begun by Stanislavski and further developed by Michael Chekhov and Sam Kogan.

It enables actors to quickly and efficiently find the best choices to serve the story through the characters they play, and to embody them in a truthful, compelling form.

The workshop will cover the theory and practical application of Active Embodiment and provide you with the essential knowledge and technique to truthfully and effectively act any character, from any play or film, in any style or genre.

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • How to properly analyse the script
  • How to establish the thesis of the material
  • How to establish the function of the character
  • How to establish the facts, circumstances and events
  • How to select and embody the three fundamental foundation stones of the characters psyche (Mind Triad)
  • How to select and embody the characters immediate state of mind (EPOA)
  • How to properly pitch your performance
  • The secrets of zen and the art of acting
  • Active Embodiment for successful self-tapes

Each session starts with meditation and a yoga-based warm up for actors.

The workshop includes practical group exercises.

Individual attention will be given to each student to help you master the techniques.
